The New Homophobia

Universities

This page links to 49 universities from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand redefining homosexuality from same sex attraction to "same gender" attraction, erasing the lived experiences of lesbians and gays, who are not attracted to members of the opposite sex, even if they identify as the same gender.

Confused? See our explanation on what this is about and why it's problematic.

The definitions seem somewhat incoherent: they define "gender" as a social construct, but then define same sex attraction as attraction to the "same gender". They also define "MSM/WSW" ("men/women who have sex with men/women") as people who have same sex sexual partners, so they have not completely erased homosexuality.

Lesbian is defined as a "self-identified woman" who is attracted to women, while the definitions of "homosexual", "heterosexual", "bisexual" and "gay" remain unchanged, although in the definition of heterosexual, "opposite sex" is in quotation marks.
"Homosexual" and "heterosexual" are defined as sex based, but "same/opposite sex" are in quotation marks. Like many other sites, it says the term "homosexual" is outdated.

No mention of "same sex". "Lesbian" is defined as "a term people may use to describe their identity as a woman" attracted to women. They do not specify what a woman is, however their use of the phrase "describes their identity" suggests a gender identity based definition. Same with "gay".

"Lesbian" has a seemingly obvious definition of women attracted to other women, but seeing the definitions of "trans woman" and "trans man", this means the definition of "lesbian" includes people of any biology, including people with penises.
As if erasing same sex attraction in their definitions of homosexual, lesbian, gay and bisexual weren't enough, they also claim "gay" means attraction to the "same or a similar gender".
The definition of "bisexual" as "attraction to men and women" has a note underneath saying it's been "critiqued for being reductive and not inclusive of transgender, nonbinary, and genderqueer identities"

"Same sex attraction" is defined as someone attracted to the same sex or gender. I must say Yale's commitment to redefining homosexuality is impressive.
"Lesbian" is described as a woman attracted to other women, but there is no definition for "woman".
"Gay" and "bisexual" have dual sex/gender definitions.
"Homosexual" is listed under "outdated terms", with its replacements being gay or lesbian. I also noticed it listed "gender nonconforming" as outdated, with "non-binary" as its replacement, despite the fact gender nonconforming people may not identify that way. This also suggests that if you reject gender roles that you are not a man or a woman. "Biological female/male" are also listed as outdated, with "assigned female/male at birth" preferred; despite the fact sex can be determined before birth.

Lesbian is defined as a woman attracted to women, and possibly "other genders". This implies a gender-based definition of woman, and therefore a gender-based definition of lesbianism.

Also note: The definition of "homophobia" is defined as discrimination against people who are "LGBTQ+", despite the fact many may be heterosexual, or have no sexual attraction (asexuality). However, "transphobia" has a more precise definition, defined as discrimination against "trans, genderqueer or gender non-conforming" people.

"Sexual orientation" is given 3 definitions: what terms someone identifies with, their attraction and their behaviour. This could have problematic implications: If a closeted gay person "identifies" as straight, does that make them straight? If "sexual orientation" is about behaviour, does that make it a choice? These definitions may be a result of thoughtlessness, but the fact serious, prominent organisations are publishing things like this in the name of diversity and inclusion is concerning.
"Same-sex" is mentioned in the history of the slur "queer". "Heterosexual" has also been redefined.
